In Elementary Holmes says something about marriage in one of his interactions with Dr. Jane Watson.
“Marriage is an elaborate ruse.”
When countered by Dr. Watson he says there are other ways to describe it,
“An unnatural arrangement which forces its participants into an unhealthy monogamy, a cauldron of petty fights, resentful compromises which like Chinese water torture transforms both parties into howling, neurotic version of their former self. “
The lucidity and clarity of thought in the delivery of this monologue makes one sit up and take notice of it. I listened to this half a dozen times before I could wrap my head around it.
